Benefits of Eating Seasonally
Our accessibility to all types of produce from all over the world has its benefits of allowing us to stay connected to the fruits and vegetables of our cultural heritage, but here are some reasons why you should shop for what’s in season:

More flavourful and higher in nutritional value

The problem with produce that isn’t harvested locally, is that it must be picked before it’s fully ripened in order to accommodate for the transit time (think of the bananas coming from the tropics). This means that the produce is picked before it can develop essential enzymes and nutrients that contribute to flavour and nutritional value. This is why tropical fruits are so much juicier and delicious when you’re on vacation as they were probably picked that day when they reached full ripeness. Seasonal produce means a shorter transit time and a longer time on the vine, which leads into my next point.

Supports your microbiome (gut health)

Your microbiome is the good bacteria in your gut. Your gut is responsible for optimal digestion, a strong immune system, mental clarity and focus, skin health, blood sugar balance and so much more. In order to maintain an optimal balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut, it requires a variety of different fibrous whole foods. Rotating what we eat with the seasons helps to build a strong microbiome and overall strong immune system. Our fall foods also offer the nutrients we need to prepare for the colder months to come. Summer fruits and veggies gave us the energy to enjoy the warmer long days. The root veggies of fall help provide a grounding nourishment for our bodies and soul. 

Saves money!

Less travel time, more availability since it’s in season = lower prices. Eating for the seasons is a great way to support your nutritional needs and save money!

Decrease carbon footprint

Taking advantage of what is locally available is a great way to decrease our impact on the earth. Less travel = less gasses emitted into our atmosphere. Cleaner earth = healthier soil, better produce, healthier bodies.

Support local farmers

We love supporting our local farmers! I encourage you to give your money back to our communities when you can instead of big box corporations. I love going to farmer’s markets and connecting with the farmers and  learning new ways to cook your favourite vegetables. I’ve learned so much from connecting with the farmers and you can feel the love they’ve put into their harvest and that energy is so important when it comes to your food! Plus I admire the diversity in the produce that you don’t see in grocery stores. Veggies and fruits aren’t always the same size or colours, just like us! A beautiful reminder that we’re all beautiful in our own unique ways.
